Shah Najaf Imambara is located near Sikandar Bagh on south bank of Gomti. A replica of the tomb of Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad, at Najaf in Iraq, it is also known as Najaf-e-Ashraf. It contains the tombs of Ghazi-ud-din Haider and his wives, including Mubarak Mahal, his European wife.. The interior is used to store chandeliers, and elaborate creations of wood, bamboo and silver paper which are carried through the streets during the Muharram Festival. The tombs are plated in gold and silver. The building was used a shelter by the rebels during the mutiny of 1857. It is open from 6am to 5pm.
